Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) have become an integral part of modern military operations, offering numerous advantages for various tasks on the battlefield. These systems are employed primarily for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, enabling real-time monitoring of enemy movements and assessments of potential threats. UAS can also contribute to target acquisition by accurately identifying and locating targets, which can then be relayed to ground forces for more precise strikes.
Their presence on the battlefield can improve communication links between ground and air forces, as well as between different units, leading to better coordination and collaboration during combat operations. As technology continues to advance, UAS are expected to play an even more significant role in military operations and beyond, offering numerous advantages in terms of situational awareness, mission effectiveness, and reduced risk to human life.
A master's thesis focused on defining the capabilities and limitations of a sensor carrying drone within a predetermined footprint that delves into several key aspects of drone technology, including design, engineering, and performance. You will explore the relationship between the drone's dimensions and its capacity to perform different tasks, such as carrying payloads, flight time and maintaining flight stability.
The design and engineering aspects of the drone would also be investigated, with a focus on optimizing its structure, materials, and propulsion systems to meet the desired performance criteria. The study may also explore the potential for modifications to enhance the drone's capabilities within the given footprint, such as altering its design or incorporating new technology.
We are looking for two students studying mechanical engineering or equivalent, preferably within product development. The work might include simulation in Matlab or FEM software, as well as CAD, so knowledge within this, and drone technology, is a merit. Furthermore, an investigative and innovative approach to proving theory is key to solving complex problems. Two students working together with the thesis is recommended but not a requirement.
This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
