This role is in the DroneShield Sydney headquarters in Pyrmont, Sydney. There are approximately 240 staff based in the 4,000sqm facility today, scheduled to grow to approximately 300 staff by end of 2026. Overseas on the ground presence includes Virginia (USA), Denmark, Germany and Dubai, as well as distributors in over 70 countries globally.


About the role

DroneShield is seeking a Drone Pilot with relevant experience to join the team in Sydney, Australia. 

The position will report to Chief Remote Pilot. The role is primarily focused on the maintenance and support of DroneShield engineering efforts. You will operate commercial and hobby drone(s) in various conditions and locations around NSW for the purpose of data captures, tests, evaluations and demonstrations. You will also be responsible for all associated processes and support systems to improve project delivery at DroneShield. 


Responsibilities, Duties and Expectations 

  • Travel regularly outside of your homebase for a wide range of field activities including data capture exercises, tests/evaluations, and demonstrations  
  • Perform all RePL duties and responsibilities related, but not limited to; flight planning, drone operations, and record keeping requirements under ReOC 
  • Maintain the DroneShield field testing facility and equipment 
  • Coordinate the DroneShield drone inventory, including tagging, maintaining, and preparing drone airframes at testing facility and Sydney CBD office 
  • Contribute to the DroneShield drone intelligence database, regularly completing market scans for new drones and new drone-related information 
  • High work ethic and the desire to take ownership over tasks/problems that may fall outside of your immediate job description/team 
  • Survey new locations for potential test sites that meet Engineering requirements 
  • Be willing to undergo any additional qualifications and retraining as required. 
  • Support Project Delivery and the business at large 

Qualifications, Experience and Skills 

  • Extensive experience in hobby radios, including proficiency in video and telemetry systems.
  • Proven track record in building, maintaining, and repairing a variety of FPV and model aircraft, including fixed-wing aircrafts, multi-rotors, helicopters, and gliders.
  • Demonstrated experience in drone racing, with a strong understanding of competitive strategies and equipment tuning.
  • Solid understanding of flight control software and CLI configurators such as Betaflight, INAV, and ArduPilot.
  • Knowledge of autopilot FC software such as PX4 or similar is highly desirable.
  • Certification in Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) for commercial drone operations.
  • Familiarity with live demonstrations of products
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues in the field.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong background in electronics and mechanical systems is desirable
  • The following commercial drone pilot qualifications and experience: 
    • RePL - Remote pilot licence 
    • AROC - Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate 
  • Experience in complex operations is desirable, e.g. in restricted areas, within 3NM of controlled aerodromes, EVLOS, BVLOS.
  • Education in Engineering, technical field of study or equivalent practical experience, is an advantage.
  • Experience with Linux Operating systems is also an advantage. Comfortable working with the Terminal, Text Manipulation Tools, Process Monitoring and Networking
  • Candidate should be willing to be in the Sydney CBD office for 1-2 day(s), and to travel around NSW for data captures and tests.
